Personal Prayers

Here are some prayers you can use to help you talk to God. He will be listening wherever and whenever you pray, whether you pray out loud or silently, on your own or with others. Just find a quiet spot, and give yourself some time to relax. For some people, quiet background music helps, for others silence works best.

Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving
Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you
for all the benefits you have won for us,
for all the pains and insults you have borne for us.
Most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,
may we know you more clearly,
love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly,
day by day.
St Richard of Chichester
Loving Lord,fill us with your life-giving, joy-giving, peace-giving presence
that we may praise you now with our lips
and all the day long with our lives,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Prayer for Guidance
Lord Jesus,
Be a bright flame before me,
Be a guiding star above me,
Be a smooth path below me,
Be a kindly shepherd behind me,
Today, tonight and for ever.

Prayer of Dedication
My Father, I abandon myself to you, do with me as you will.
Whatever you may do with me, I thank you.
I am prepared for anything, I accept everything, provided your will is fulfilled in me as in all creatures,
I ask for nothing more.
My God, I place my soul in your hands,
I give it to you, my God, with all the love of my heart because I love you, and for me it is a necessity of love, this gift of myself, this placing of myself in your hands, without reserve, in boundless confidence, because you are my Father.
Father Pere de Foucourd

Prayer for Forgiveness
Almighty God,
Often we find it hard to escape the chains of past sin committed by us or to us;
help us to accept the absolution that is offered through your unconditional love when we come to you in faith.

The ‘Jesus Prayer’
Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

A Prayer for all who live in fear
Lord God, creator of us all, look with your divine compassion upon all who live in fear.
Comfort them with your presence, uphold them in your love and grant us all, with them,
the grace and courage to work for a world where justice and peace may flourish and your Name be hallowed.

Prayers for those who are suffering
Grant, O Lord, to all those who are bearing pain, your spirit of healing, your spirit of life, your spirit of peace and hope, of courage and endurance. Cast out from them the spirit of anxiety and fear; grant them perfect confidence and trust in thee, that in your light they may see light; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ; rest your weary ones; bless your dying ones; soothe your suffering ones; pity your afflicted ones; shield your joyous ones, and all for your love’s sake.
